What is Senior Portrait Photography?
Senior portraits are actually a tradition that dates back to the 1880s, believe it or not. They became popular to document the transition between teen to adult and have found a permanent place in portraiture since. The development of society and technology has greatly advanced this genre. Senior portrait photography consists of so much more than a portrait. It’s a memory of time, a snapshot of a teen’s personality, and a picture that is cherished for years to come.
We wanted to showcase some of our favorite examples of senior portrait photography from our Visual Flow Facebook Community. Join and submit your images to our weekly challenges for a chance to be featured in the next article or our Instagram feed! You’ll see how silhouettes look in various scenes:

Classic & Creative Senior Portraits
The quintessential purpose of senior portraits is to capture a classic image of the teen. Finding a clean background and capturing an image that parents can print or add to yearbook shoutouts is the perfect use of a senior portrait.

Senior Portraits That Showcase Personality
Part of the evolution of senior portraits came when photographers started to capture more personality in their images. The first senior portraits were filled with blank stares and stoic expressions. Obviously, that was a sign of the times and since then senior portraits have become a way to capture the personality of a teen in a creative way. Here are some of our favorite examples:

Senior Portraits That Showcase Talent
A great way to get variety from a senior portrait session is to incorporate hobbies and interests into the photographs. This is not only a great way to add props with meaning to the scene, but show off a talent that the subject has. It will make for a great memory in the future to look back on.
