We’re back with another Visual Flow artist feature! This time around, we’re excited to interview wedding photographer Fabrizio Proietto of FineArt Studio, out of Tulum/Riviera Maya, Mexico. You can find Fabrizio online via his website and Instagram.
How long have you been a photographer? What got you started?
Photography has been in my blood for generations. My father was a photographer, as was his uncle before him. Many of my family members have pursued photography in one way or another. I began assisting my father at the age of 13 in Lake Como, Italy, where I was born. From there, I grew—both as a person and as a photographer (and aged a little too!).
What’s In Your Gear Bag?
Over the years, I’ve simplified my gear significantly. Early on, I thought carrying more equipment was better, but I’ve learned that simplicity is key. My kit includes two Canon R6 bodies, a 24-70mm lens, a 70-200mm lens, a backup 24-70mm lens, a transmitter for flash, two flashes, and Godox lights. These essentials allow me to be versatile and efficient.
How did you establish and define your shooting and editing style?
I blend editorial-style photography during portrait sessions with a candid approach throughout the rest of the event. I believe the authenticity of emotions on such a special day is the essence of storytelling. This balance ensures that the final images feel both polished and deeply personal.
How do you differentiate yourself from the photographer down the street?
That’s a great question, but I think it’s one I shouldn’t answer myself. Evaluating one’s own work is always challenging, not just in photography but in life. I try not to compare myself to others. Instead, I focus on becoming a better person and professional each day, always striving to grow.
What is the best part about being a photographer?
The best part of being a photographer is that what we “sell” isn’t disposable. It’s not something that fades away. Instead, our work becomes a part of history—or at least of our clients’ family legacies. I love imagining the day when a grandchild of one of my clients looks back at their grandparents’ wedding photos, reliving the emotions and seeing what life was like at that moment.
What is the most challenging part about being a photographer?
Keeping up with new trends while staying open-minded is always a challenge. The industry evolves constantly, and adapting to what our clients want often requires reevaluating and sometimes letting go of what we thought we knew.
Who are some of your favorite photographers?
Sebastião Salgado is hands down my favorite. Every time I look at his work, I find myself thinking, “How on earth is he this good?” And, of course, my father, who inspired me to pursue this craft.
What are your sources of photography inspiration?
In today’s world, Instagram has become an unavoidable source of inspiration, though I sometimes miss the days of flipping through photography books or old magazines from the masters. There’s something timeless about the inspiration that comes from print.
What are the keys to success in this industry?
Professionalism, honesty, hard work, and resilience. It’s about staying focused and moving forward, no matter the obstacles.
What advice would you give someone wanting to learn how to edit in Lightroom?
Patience is crucial. Take your time to learn and practice. Also, avoid editing for too many hours straight—otherwise, you’ll end up with colors that are completely off!
How has the Visual Flow Preset system changed your workflow?
It has drastically sped up my workflow, allowing me to create compelling images with just a few clicks. I no longer spend hours tweaking a single photo, which gives me more time to focus on other aspects of my work.
